About this circuit

Meghalaya ("abode of clouds") delivers the most otherworldly landscapes in India: Shillong's colonial hill-station calm, Cherrapunji's record-breaking monsoon cliffs, Mawlynnong (Asia's cleanest village), and Dawki's ethereally transparent Umngot River where boats appear to float on glass.

Why it matters

The Khasi tribe of Meghalaya invented living root bridges — centuries-old bridges grown from the aerial roots of rubber fig trees, with some spanning 30m. Cherrapunji held the world record for highest annual rainfall for over a century.

Good to know

  • ·Living root bridges require a steep 3,500-step descent at Nongriat — carry trekking shoes
  • ·Dawki is 1km from Bangladesh; carry ID; camera fees apply at the border
  • ·Roads from Shillong to Cherrapunji are twisting — allow 2.5–3hrs for 55km
  • ·Book accommodation well ahead in Mawlynnong — very limited rooms
