About this circuit

Greece and Türkiye by air: through Athens to Santorini for the Oia sunset, the caldera hike from Fira and the volcano by boat; back to Athens for the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum and the lanes of Plaka; a flight to Istanbul for Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı and the Bosphorus ferries; then on to Cappadocia for Göreme's fairy chimneys, cave hotels and balloons at sunrise, and home through Istanbul.

Why it matters

Athens is the city where democracy began, Akrotiri on Santorini is a Bronze Age town buried by the eruption, and the Göreme Open-Air Museum keeps Byzantine frescoes in cave chapels. In Istanbul Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and the Grand Bazaar are within a short walk of each other, and IndiGo flies non-stop between Athens and Delhi and Mumbai.

Stop by stop

How the 12 days split across the 4 stops, and what each one costs on the ground for two.

1.SantoriniDay 1–2 · 2 days here

A crescent of island around a drowned volcano: Fira and Oia's white houses and blue domes on cliffs 300 m above the caldera, the Oia sunset, the hike along the rim from Fira to Oia, boat trips to the volcano and hot springs, the Bronze Age town of Akrotiri buried by the eruption, and black and red sand beaches at Kamari and Perissa. Cruise ships land thousands a day in season, so the caldera paths are packed from late morning. Flights from Athens take 45 minutes; ferries from Piraeus 5 to 9 hours. Indian restaurants in Fira. Open all year, but Oia is half shut from November to March.

Don't miss: Sunset in Oia · Caldera hike from Fira to Oia.

How long: 2 days here; on its own Santorini is worth 3 — add a day if you can.

Santorini (Thira) Airport (JTR), 6 km

2 days for two from ₹37,256 · ₹81,599 mid-range — stay, food, local travel and entry; the journey here is extra

2.AthensDay 3–5 · 3 days here

Greece's capital and its arrival airport from India: the Acropolis with the Parthenon, the Acropolis Museum, the Ancient Agora and Roman Forum, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Plaka and Monastiraki lanes below them. Lycabettus Hill and the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion are the sunset views; Aegina, Agistri and Hydra are an hour or two by boat from Piraeus. Ferries to every island group leave from Piraeus and Rafina. The Acropolis runs on timed tickets and closes in the hottest hours during heatwaves. Indian restaurants are easy to find in the centre, and IndiGo flies non-stop to Mumbai and Delhi.

Don't miss: Acropolis and the Parthenon at opening time · Acropolis Museum.

How long: 3 days, which is the recommended stay.

Athens International Airport (ATH), 33 km

3 days for two from ₹50,138 · ₹99,777 mid-range — stay, food, local travel and entry; the journey here is extra

3.IstanbulDay 6–9 · 4 days here

Turkey's great city, on both banks of the Bosphorus, and where nearly every flight from India lands. Sultanahmet (the Old City) holds Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace, the Basilica Cistern and the Grand Bazaar within a short walk; across the Golden Horn, Galata and Beyoğlu have the tower, İstiklal Avenue and the rooftop bars, and public ferries cross to Kadıköy in Asia for the price of a metro ride. Indian restaurants are in Sultanahmet and around Taksim, and vegetarian meze and lentil soup are everywhere.

Don't miss: Hagia Sophia · Blue Mosque and the Hippodrome.

How long: 4 days, which is the recommended stay.

The village at the heart of Cappadocia (Göreme, Kapadokya), among the valleys of fairy chimneys and rock-cut churches. Hot-air balloons lift off at sunrise when the wind allows; the Göreme Open-Air Museum keeps Byzantine frescoes in cave chapels; and the Rose, Red and Love valleys are easy walks. Most visitors sleep in a cave hotel. Fly to Nevşehir or Kayseri from Istanbul (about 1 h 20), or take the overnight bus.

What it costs

from ₹1,65,715 a person

The whole 12-day trip as the planner prices it in April, for two sharing at budget stays: flights from India and back, travel between the stops and across the borders, stays, food, getting around, entry fees and the planner's buffer.

The two visas for an Indian passport, about ₹15,890 a person in all, are on top.

When to go

JFMAMJJASOND
April to June and September to October suit all four; in July and August heatwaves can close the Acropolis at midday and the meltemi wind cancels island ferries, and from December to February Cappadocia's balloons are often grounded

Entry rules: two visas

  • Greece

Visa needed before you fly for up to 90 days, about ₹11,590

Apply for a Schengen short-stay (type C) visa at a VFS Global Greece centre in India, 4-8 weeks before you fly, and at least 6 weeks ahead for June to September (no earlier than 6 months). Apply to Greece if it is your only or longest stay in Schengen. The fee is €90 (about ₹9,600; €45 for children 6-11) plus the VFS service charge, and it is not refunded if the visa is refused.

Checked 2026-10. Full rules for Greece

  • Türkiye

Visa needed before you fly for up to 30 days, about ₹4,300

If you hold a valid US, UK, Irish or Schengen visa or residence permit, apply online for the Turkish e-Visa at evisa.gov.tr (single entry, up to 30 days, about US$44.5: US$43 plus a US$1.5 processing fee); use only the official site. Otherwise apply for a sticker tourist visa through the Turkish consulate's visa centre (VFS Global) at least 3-4 weeks before you fly.

Checked 2026-10. Full rules for Türkiye

More of Greece and Türkiye

Good to know

  • ·Indian passports need a Schengen visa for Greece, applied for 4-8 weeks ahead; with it, still valid on the day you land, you can get Türkiye's e-Visa online at evisa.gov.tr (for arrival by air, up to 30 days) instead of a sticker visa
  • ·Orthodox Easter (2 May 2027) closes shops and sites in Greece from Good Friday to Easter Monday and fills the flights, and Kurban Bayramı (about 16-19 May 2027) sells out Türkiye's domestic flights
  • ·Book the Acropolis for the first entry (08:00), and Cappadocia's balloon for your first morning there, so a cancelled flight can move to the next
  • ·Walk Santorini's caldera paths early: from May to October cruise passengers fill Fira and Oia from about 10:00 to 17:00
  • ·Mosques close to visitors for about 90 minutes at each prayer, longest at Friday noon: cover shoulders, knees and (for women) hair; scarves are lent at the door
