Thailand's west coast by road, ferry and long-tail: fly straight into Phuket, drive round via Phang Nga to Krabi for Ao Nang and the cliffs of Railay, take the ferry to Koh Phi Phi for its lagoons and the viewpoint sunset, then on to the long, quiet beaches of Koh Lanta, and back through Phuket for the flight home.

Four sides of the Andaman coast in one trip: Thailand's biggest island, Railay's sheer limestone cliffs reachable only by boat, Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon on uninhabited Phi Phi Leh, and the uncrowded west-coast beaches and stilt-house old town of Koh Lanta.

Thailand's largest island, joined to the mainland by bridge, and the base for most Andaman trips: Patong's nightlife, quieter Kata and Karon, the Big Buddha, Phuket Old Town, and boat days to Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay (James Bond Island) and the Similans. Direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata. Patong has many Indian restaurants, several pure-vegetarian and Jain-friendly. Seas are rough and red flags common from May to October.

Most visitors stay at Ao Nang, the beach town, and take long-tails to Railay, a peninsula of sheer limestone cliffs reachable only by boat, and to the Four Islands and Hong Islands. Calmer and greener than Phuket, with the Tiger Cave Temple's 1,260 steps and the Emerald Pool inland. Direct IndiGo flights from Mumbai and Bengaluru. Indian restaurants on Ao Nang's main road.

Two islands between Phuket and Krabi: Phi Phi Don, where everyone stays (no cars, a busy village at Tonsai and quieter bays beyond), and uninhabited Phi Phi Leh with Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon. Maya Bay is closed to landings every year from 1 August to 30 September. Beds are dear for what you get; a night or two is plenty for most. A few Indian restaurants in Tonsai village.
A long, flat island south of Krabi with a string of uncrowded west-coast beaches, Lanta Old Town on stilts, mangroves and the marine park at its southern tip. Vans from Krabi drive on via two short car ferries; boats from Phi Phi run in the high season. Good for families and couples who want calm. Many resorts close or cut prices from May to October.
