About this circuit

From Rishikesh into the Garhwal Himalaya. Chopta starts the 3.5 km trail to Tungnath, the highest of the Panch Kedar temples, with the Chandrashila summit above it. Past Govindghat about 10 km of trail climb to Ghangaria, the base for the Valley of Flowers, 4 km on, and the steep 6 km to Hemkund Sahib's glacial lake. Badrinath is up the road from Govindghat.

Why it matters

The Valley of Flowers is a national park that, with Nanda Devi, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; it flowers through the monsoon, at its best in July and August. Hemkund Sahib, the Sikh gurdwara on its lake, and Badrinath, one of the Char Dham, make it a pilgrimage as much as a trek.
