Austria / Zell am See & the Hohe Tauern / Krimml WaterfallsKrimml Waterfalls
Austria's Highest Waterfalls
Three cascades falling 380 m at the head of the Salzach valley, the highest waterfalls in Austria, in the Hohe Tauern National Park. A path climbs beside them through the spray (about 1.5 hours up to the top fall, with viewpoints all the way), fullest in June and July with snowmelt; the WasserWelten centre explains them. The path is ticketed and kept from about mid-April to late October. Reached by the narrow-gauge Pinzgauer Lokalbahn from Zell am See, by Postbus, or over the Gerlos road from the Zillertal and Innsbruck.

Krimml Falls Path Icy in Winter
The waterfall path is kept and ticketed from about mid-April to late October. In winter only the lower falls can be seen, frozen in a cold spell, and the upper path is icy and partly closed.
- Almabtrieb (cattle coming down from the high pastures) — From mid-September to early October herds come down from the summer pastures garlanded with flowers and bells, with village fairs on the day. Dates are set locally, often only weeks ahead.
