A quiet valley west of Paro over Chele La, at 3,988 m the highest motor road pass in Bhutan, with views of Jomolhari on clear mornings. Haa opened to tourists only in 2002 and still sees few: the White and Black temples (Lhakhang Karpo and Nagpo), farmhouse stays and walks in blue-pine and rhododendron forest. Worth knowing
Chele La Can Close After Snow
The road from Paro to Haa crosses Chele La at 3,988 m, which can close for a day or two after snow from December to February. The lower road from Chuzom along the Haa Chhu is the way round; check with your driver the evening before.
- Haa Summer Festival — A celebration of Haa's nomadic herders and food (yak products, local dishes, games and songs), held in July. The monsoon is at its height, so keep a spare day for the Chele La road.
