Bhutan's commercial border town, through the Bhutan Gate from Jaigaon in West Bengal: the way most Indian visitors enter by road, about four hours from Bagdogra airport or Hasimara station. From here it is 5-6 hours up to Thimphu or Paro.

Worth knowing

Totals Exclude the Sustainable Development Fee

Bhutan charges a Sustainable Development Fee per person per night on top of your hotel: ₹1,200 for Indian citizens (₹600 for children aged 6-12), US$100 for most other passports (fixed until 31 August 2027; half for children). This plan's totals do not include it, because it depends on your passport: add it for every night you spend in Bhutan.

Worth knowing

Monsoon: Heavy Rain on the Southern Border Roads

The southern foothills get Bhutan's heaviest rain from June to August. The road up from Phuentsholing to Thimphu and the roads north from Gelephu are often blocked by slides for hours; travel by day and allow extra time.
