Wine Loops, Cochem's Castle and Fairy-Tale Burg Eltz
The Moselle winds between steep slate vineyards from Trier to Koblenz. Cochem is the base: its rebuilt Reichsburg castle over the town, river cruises and wine taverns, with trains to Koblenz (50 minutes) and Trier. Burg Eltz, a medieval castle in a forest valley still owned by the same family, is a short train ride to Moselkern and a 35-minute walk, or a seasonal bus from Treis-Karden; it opens only from about April to the start of November. Beilstein is a tiny village across the river. Wine taverns and boats slow down a lot in winter.

Worth knowing
Burg Eltz Closed in Winter
Burg Eltz opens only from about April to the start of November; in winter you can walk to it through the forest and see it from outside, but not go in, and the shuttle bus stops. Cochem's Reichsburg runs fewer tours, and many Moselle river boats and wine taverns close. Come between April and October for the full trip.
