The Prussian kings' summer capital, 25-40 minutes from central Berlin on the S-Bahn or a regional train: Frederick the Great's rococo Sanssouci and the vast New Palace in a UNESCO-listed park of terraces and follies, Cecilienhof, where the Potsdam Conference was held in 1945, the Dutch Quarter's red-brick houses, and the Glienicke Bridge of Cold War spy swaps. Most palaces close on Mondays; Sanssouci's rooms are seen on timed tickets. Usually a day trip from Berlin, but quieter and cheaper for a night.
