Fire Mountains, Black Vineyards and César Manrique's Island
The easternmost Canary Island, about 2 h 40 by air from Madrid and with no road link to the mainland: a black and ochre volcanic land from the eruptions of the 1730s, now Timanfaya National Park, where the Montañas del Fuego route (€30, sold online only for a date and time) shows heat rising from the ground; the art of César Manrique, who turned lava tubes into a lagoon and concert hall at Jameos del Agua and campaigned to keep high-rises off the island; vines planted in pits of black ash in La Geria; the green lagoon at El Golfo; and the white-sand Papagayo coves. Puerto del Carmen, the main resort, is 10 minutes from the airport; ferries cross from Playa Blanca to Fuerteventura and from Órzola to the little island of La Graciosa. Warm and dry all year, with steady trade winds; a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1993.

Heads up
Timanfaya: Book the Fire Mountains Online
The Montañas del Fuego route in Timanfaya National Park (€30) is sold online only, for a set date and time, on the island's CACT site, and the slots fill in the winter high season and in summer, when queues reach back down the road. Book before you go; the coach route through the lava is the only way into the heart of the park.
