Montserrat

A Mountain Monastery and the Black Madonna

1 dayIdeal stay₹9,050From / night₹2,880Food / dayFreeEntry

A Benedictine monastery wedged among the saw-tooth pinnacles of a mountain an hour north-west of Barcelona, home of the Black Madonna (La Moreneta), Catalonia's patron, and of one of Europe's oldest boys' choirs, the Escolania, which sings most weekday middays. The R5 train from Plaça Espanya connects with a rack railway or a cable car up; funiculars climb higher to trails with views to the Pyrenees. Most come for the day; two hotels on the mountain let you see it after the crowds leave. Expect queues to see the Madonna at weekends.
