Lake District Summer Crowds
In the school holidays Bowness, Ambleside and Keswick are packed, car parks fill by mid-morning and the lake roads crawl. Use the trains and the 555 and 599 buses, start walks early, and book rooms well ahead.
Heads up
Snow on the Fells
In winter the high fells (Helvellyn, Scafell Pike) are often under snow and ice and need winter gear and experience; the lakes and valley walks stay easy. Some boat services run a reduced timetable.
