Piedmont's capital at the foot of the Alps, and Italy's first capital: the Museo Egizio, the largest collection of Egyptian antiquities outside Cairo, the Mole Antonelliana with the National Cinema Museum inside and a glass lift to its terrace, the Royal Palace, and kilometres of baroque arcades along Via Po and round Piazza San Carlo. The Shroud of Turin is kept in the cathedral and shown only on rare occasions. Home of Fiat, vermouth, gianduja chocolate and the bicerin, and the base for the Langhe wine hills (Barolo, and Alba's white-truffle fair in October and November). Frecciarossa trains reach Milan in about an hour and Rome in about 4 h 15; cheaper and calmer than Milan for a night.

Ferragosto: Cities Half-Closed in August

Around Ferragosto (15 August, a national holiday) and for much of August, Italians take their holidays: many family restaurants, bakeries and small shops in the cities close for one to three weeks, and Sunday-style hours spread across the week. Museums and the main sights stay open. Book restaurants and check opening days before you go.
