Deep Powder Snow Under a Volcano

4 daysIdeal stay₹12,100From / night₹3,030Food / day₹6,960Entry

One of the snowiest ski areas on earth: Niseko United's four linked resorts (Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village, Annupuri) on Mount Niseko-Annupuri get dry powder from December to March, with Mount Yotei across the valley. English is widely spoken, and lodging and lift passes are priced for the ski season, when Grand Hirafu is among Japan's dearest places to stay. In summer it turns to rafting, hiking and golf at much lower prices. About 2.5-3 hours from New Chitose Airport by bus.

Heads up

Hokkaido Snow and Cold

December to March is snowy and -5 to -15 °C in Hokkaido. Flights from New Chitose and trains are delayed or cancelled in storms a few times each winter, so keep a spare half-day before a flight home. Pack a warm coat, gloves and shoes with grip; drive only with winter experience.

Ski Season: Book Early

Niseko's powder season (December to March, best in January and February) is its busiest and dearest time: lodging, lift passes, ski schools and resort shuttles book out, with Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year the peak. Book by summer.

Heads up

Niseko Between Seasons

The lifts close in early April and many restaurants and lodges shut until the summer season (rafting, hiking) or the snow returns in December; November and April to May are quiet, with little open.
