Kitesurfing Lagoon and Dolphin Pods

2 daysIdeal stay₹2,010From / night₹860Food / dayFreeEntry

A sandy peninsula on the north-west coast between a lagoon and the sea. From about May to October (and again December to February) steady winds make the lagoon one of Asia's best kitesurfing spots, with kite camps and schools. From November to April the sea calms and boats go out to pods of spinner dolphins, sometimes hundreds strong. Wilpattu National Park, for leopards without Yala's crowds, is an hour north-east. Simple eco-lodges and kite camps rather than big hotels.

Highlights

  • Kitesurf lessons on the lagoon (May–Oct)
  • Spinner-dolphin boat trip (Nov–Apr)
  • Bar Reef snorkelling
  • Wilpattu leopard safari

Heads up

Kite Season, Not Dolphin Season

From May to September the wind blows hard: ideal for kitesurfing on the lagoon, but the dolphin boats stop and the sea is rough. Dolphin season is November to April.
