Malaysia's first national park, a lowland rainforest often called 130 million years old. From Kuala Tahan village you cross the Tembeling river to the park HQ for the canopy walkway, the climb up Bukit Teresek, night walks for insects and slow lorises, river boats to the Lata Berkoh rapids, and an Orang Asli village visit. Rooms are simple except for the one resort at the HQ. Reached by minivan from KL (about 4-5 h), or by bus to Jerantut and the river boat from Kuala Tembeling.

Heads up

Wet Season in the Rainforest

November to January is the wettest time: trails are muddy and full of leeches (wear leech socks), the Tembeling river can flood, and boat trips and the canopy walkway close after heavy rain.

  • Ramadan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri — During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk: Malay restaurants are quiet by day and the evening Ramadan bazaars, with food stalls at every mosque and market, are the best street food of the year. Don't eat or drink in the street in Kelantan and Terengganu. At its end, Hari Raya Aidilfitri brings the "balik kampung" exodus: buses, trains and flights sell out weeks ahead and KL empties for a week. Dates move about 11 days earlier each year; they are set by the new moon.
