Jungle-Covered Island with Villages on the Beach
A big, mountainous island off the Johor-Pahang coast, mostly rainforest, with fishing villages (kampungs) strung along the west-coast beaches: ABC (Air Batang) and Salang for backpackers and divers, Tekek for the jetty and duty-free shop, Juara's surf beach across the hills on the east. Good reefs and dive sites, jungle walks to waterfalls, and monitor lizards on the paths. Ferries from Mersing take about 2-2.5 h. Unlike the Perhentians it stays open in the monsoon, with fewer, rougher boats.

Worth knowing
Monsoon Seas: Fewer, Rougher Ferries
Tioman stays open through the north-east monsoon, but ferries from Mersing run less often, change times at short notice and are cancelled in high seas; diving visibility is poor and some resorts close. Keep a spare day before your flight.
- Ramadan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri — During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk: Malay restaurants are quiet by day and the evening Ramadan bazaars, with food stalls at every mosque and market, are the best street food of the year. Don't eat or drink in the street in Kelantan and Terengganu. At its end, Hari Raya Aidilfitri brings the "balik kampung" exodus: buses, trains and flights sell out weeks ahead and KL empties for a week. Dates move about 11 days earlier each year; they are set by the new moon.
- Year-end school holidays — Malaysian and Singaporean families travel in December: Cameron Highlands' road jams at weekends, Langkawi and Penang resorts are at their dearest round Christmas and New Year, and Melaka is packed with Singaporean weekenders. Book rooms and buses early.
