Van Goghs in the Forest and Free White Bikes Across the Heath
A national park of about 5,400 hectares of forest, heath and drifting sand in Gelderland, with the Kröller-Müller Museum at its heart: the second-largest Van Gogh collection in the world (after Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum) and one of Europe's largest sculpture gardens. Free white bikes at the entrances and the museum take you across the park; red deer and wild boar live in it, and the deer rut in September and October. A park and museum day ticket was €27.75 for adults in 2026, paid by card only; the museum is closed on Mondays (ESTIMATE). By train to Ede-Wageningen (about an hour from Amsterdam) and the bus to Otterlo, or from Arnhem; stay in Otterlo, Ede or Arnhem.

Heads up
Card Only at the Gates
De Hoge Veluwe's entrances and the Kröller-Müller Museum take cards only, no cash. The museum is closed on Mondays, and the park's gates close at dusk, earlier in winter: check the hours for your date.
- King's Day (Koningsdag) — The national holiday for the King's birthday: the whole country dresses in orange, every street becomes a flea market (the vrijmarkt, from the evening before), and Amsterdam's canals fill with party boats and its centre with up to a million people. Trains into Amsterdam are packed and hotels cost their most; book months ahead, or watch it in a calmer city such as Utrecht, Haarlem or Delft. Museums open, many shops close.
