Lagos

Golden Cliffs, Sea Arches and the Benagil Cave

3 daysIdeal stay₹8,520From / night₹2,130Food / day₹2,660Entry

The western Algarve's liveliest town, in old walls beside a marina, and the base for the coast of golden cliffs, sea stacks and grottoes on Portugal's posters: the rock arches of Ponta da Piedade by boat or kayak, the coves of Dona Ana and Camilo down cliff stairways, and the Benagil sea cave, about 45 minutes east, whose domed chamber is seen from tour boats (landing on its beach is not allowed). The Seven Hanging Valleys trail runs along the clifftops from Praia da Marinha. Sagres and Cape St Vincent, Europe's south-western tip, are 35 minutes west. Trains from Lisbon change at Tunes; Faro airport is 85 km away. Summer is busy and hot; from November to March many beach businesses close and the sea is often too rough for the cave boats.

When to go

Best time: May – October

Worth knowing

Wildfire Season

From July to September hot, dry winds spread wildfires in the forests of the centre and north, the Algarve hills (Monchique) and Madeira, as in 2017, 2024 and 2025. Follow the civil-protection text alerts, obey road and trail closures, never light a fire or barbecue outdoors, and check before a hike. Travel insurance should cover cancellations.

Heads up

Benagil Cave: Seen From the Water Only

Landing on the beach inside the Benagil cave is banned for boats, kayaks and paddleboards, and swimming in is dangerous: licensed boat trips from Portimão, Benagil and Carvoeiro show the cave from the water. Trips are cancelled when the sea is rough, which is common from November to March.

Heads up

Winter in the Algarve: Quiet Resorts, Fewer Boats

From November to March the Algarve is mild (15-18 °C by day) and cheap, but many beach bars, boat and kayak tours and resort hotels close, and Atlantic swells cancel the grotto trips on many days. Lagos and Faro stay open all year.
