Misty Border Town of Shan Temples, at the End of the Loop
A small, quiet town in a mountain valley near the Myanmar border, the far end of the Mae Hong Son Loop: the Shan-style temples Wat Chong Kham and Wat Chong Klang reflected in Jong Kham lake, Wat Doi Kong Mu on the hill above, the tea-growing Chinese village of Ban Rak Thai, and the Su Tong Pae bamboo bridge across the rice fields. The road from Chiang Mai through Pai has well over a thousand bends and takes about six hours, and the little airport had no scheduled flights in late 2026; most people stop in Pai on the way. Cold mornings in December and January; the burning-season smoke from February to April is among the worst in the country.

When to go
Best time: November – February
Worth knowing
Burning Season Smoke
⚠️ Crop and forest burning fills the northern valleys with smoke from February to April, worst in March: PM2.5 often reaches several times the safe level and mountain views disappear. Not a good time for children, the elderly or anyone with asthma. Check AQI before booking, carry N95 masks, or move this leg to November–January.
Heads up
Haze Starting
Smoke from crop burning usually begins in February. Early in the month is usually fine; by the end, check the daily AQI.
- Buddhist holy days (Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, Asahna Bucha) · Visakha Bucha 31 May; Asahna Bucha and Buddhist Lent 29–30 Jul — Candle-lit processions round the temples at dusk, worth seeing in Chiang Mai and Ayutthaya. Alcohol may not be sold anywhere, bars included, for 24-48 hours (hotels and airport duty free excepted); the Full Moon Party moves a night.
- Poy Sang Long (Shan novice ordination) — Three days when Shan boys about to become novice monks are dressed as princes, in silk, flowers and make-up, and carried on their relatives' shoulders round the temples of Mae Hong Son town with music and offerings. The dates are set by the temples each year, usually late March or early April; it falls in the smoky season, so check the air quality too.
- Bua Tong (Mexican sunflower) bloom, Doi Mae U Kho — Through November the hillsides of Doi Mae U Kho near Khun Yuam, about 1.5 hours south of Mae Hong Son, turn yellow with wild sunflowers, with a small local festival. Thai weekend crowds fill the few rooms in Khun Yuam: go on a weekday or as a day trip.
