California's wine country, an hour and a quarter north of San Francisco: hundreds of wineries along Napa's Highway 29 and the Silverado Trail and in the smaller, cheaper Sonoma Valley next door, with tastings at about US$40-100 a person and most needing a booking. The Napa Valley Wine Train, dawn hot-air balloons, Calistoga's mud baths and Oxbow Public Market fill the rest. Harvest (August to October) is the liveliest time and the wildfire season; take a tour or a designated driver for the tasting day.
Tourisma may earn a small commission if you book — it never changes your price.

Wildfire Season
Late summer and autumn are California's wildfire season: fires and smoke can close parks, roads and wineries at short notice, and dry autumn winds (Santa Ana, Diablo) bring power shut-offs. Check the CAL FIRE incident map and air quality (AirNow) each morning, and keep plans flexible.
