Chiang Mai in October

Mixed monthBest time: November – February

Mixed month: October is outside the recommended season (November – February). Loy Krathong and Yi Peng lantern festival can fall this month. Nothing in our data flags October as a problem, but it isn't the season the place is best in.

The season opens in November, next month. Burning Season Smoke usually starts in March, 5 months away.

What’s on in October

Timing a trip around these changes what you pay and what you can book.

  • Loy Krathongdates shift yearly

On the full moon of the twelfth lunar month, people float candle-lit krathong baskets on rivers and ponds. Sukhothai's historical park holds the oldest celebration, with light shows over the ruins; Bangkok's riverside piers get very crowded. Hotels in Sukhothai and Chiang Mai fill weeks ahead.

  • Yi Peng lantern festivaldates shift yearly

Chiang Mai's lantern festival, alongside Loy Krathong. Mass sky-lantern releases now happen only at ticketed events outside the city (several thousand baht a person, sold out months ahead); free lanterns are restricted near the airport. The old city is packed and hotel prices double, so book by August.
