Worth knowing
Freezing Winters in the Mountains
From December to February the northern mountains are cold and often misty: nights can drop below 0 °C in Sapa and Ha Giang, with frost and sometimes snow on the peaks, and many homestays have no heating. Fog can hide the terraces and passes for days. Pack a warm jacket, gloves and layers.

Entry rules
E-visa before you fly for up to 90 days, about ₹2,380
- At least a week before you fly, apply for the e-visa on the official portal, evisa.gov.vn: passport scan, a recent photo, your entry date and the airport you will land at. The fee is US$25 single entry or US$50 multiple entry (for a side trip to Cambodia or Laos), paid by card and not refunded if refused.
- Approval usually takes 3 working days. Download the e-visa, check every letter of your name and passport number and the dates, and print it.
- At immigration, show your passport and the printed e-visa. There is no arrival card. Enter through the airport or border post named on the e-visa.
- Flying straight into Phu Quoc from abroad and staying on the island: no visa is needed for up to 30 days, but you need one to go on to the mainland. India's embassy in Hanoi advises getting the e-visa anyway, in case you have to reach the mainland in an emergency.
Carry: Passport valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive, with two blank pages; Printed e-visa approval letter; Return or onward ticket; Hotel bookings for the stay.
Use only evisa.gov.vn (the Vietnam Immigration Department's portal); look-alike sites charge two to four times the fee. The e-visa cannot be extended inside Vietnam, so choose its dates and single or multiple entry carefully.
Checked 2026-10; confirm with the embassy before you fly.
