The weather in September

What the season does to Sai Kung this month.

Worth knowing

Typhoon Season

July to September is the height of the typhoon season. When the Hong Kong Observatory raises the No. 8 signal, almost everything shuts for hours to a day or two: ferries stop, the cable car, Disneyland, Ocean Park and most shops close, buses thin out, the MTR runs a reduced service and flights are cancelled. Watch the Observatory's app, keep a spare day before your flight home, and book refundable rooms and tickets.

Worth knowing

Heat and Storms on the Trails

Summer days are 31-34 °C and very humid, and the Dragon's Back, Lantau Peak and Sai Kung's trails have little shade. Start at dawn, carry two litres of water a person, and turn back if the Observatory issues a red or black rainstorm warning or a thunderstorm warning: hill paths flood and landslips happen.

Entry rules

No visa needed for up to 14 days

  1. Before you fly, register online for the free Pre-arrival Registration (PAR) for Indian nationals on the Hong Kong Immigration Department website (immd.gov.hk). It must succeed before you travel; do it as soon as you book, so there is time to apply for a visa if it does not.
  2. Print the PAR notification slip on blank white A4 paper and sign it. Airlines ask for it at check-in and will not board you without it; show it again at Hong Kong immigration. One registration is valid for six months.
  3. You may stay up to 14 days a visit. For a longer stay, or if your registration fails, you need a visa from the Immigration Department before you travel.

Carry: Passport valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive; Signed PAR notification slip, printed on A4 paper; Confirmed return or onward ticket within 14 days; Hotel bookings for the stay; Proof of funds (bank statement or cards), if the officer asks.

The registration is free: sites that charge for it are not the Immigration Department. It covers Hong Kong only: Macau and mainland China have their own entry rules, so check them before a side trip.

Checked 2026-10; confirm with the embassy before you fly.
