About this circuit

Four days in London for the Tower and the Crown Jewels, Westminster Abbey, the Changing of the Guard and the free British Museum and Natural History Museum; the Eurostar under the Channel from St Pancras to Gare du Nord; then four days in Paris for the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame and Montmartre, with Versailles a half-day out by RER C. Fly into Heathrow and home from Paris.

Why it matters

London's great museums are free, and Indian London is on every line: Southall's Punjabi high street and its gurdwara, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir at Neasden, and South Indian food in Tooting and East Ham. In Paris, Passage Brady and the Tamil quarter of La Chapelle have pure-vegetarian South and North Indian food.

More of the United Kingdom and France

Good to know

  • ·Indian passports need two visas: a UK Standard Visitor visa, applied for on GOV.UK 4-6 weeks ahead and no earlier than three months, and a Schengen visa for France; neither counts towards the other
  • ·The Eurostar runs from St Pancras to Gare du Nord in about 2 h 15; the French border check is done at St Pancras before boarding, so allow time for it, and changes are free up to an hour before
  • ·At the UK airport use the Border Force desks, not the eGates, with your return ticket, hotel bookings and proof of funds ready
  • ·In London tap in and out on the Tube and buses with a contactless card or phone: fares cap each day
  • ·Strikes in France can cancel trains and flights at a few days' notice: check SNCF Connect and your airline, and keep a spare day before the flight home
