🗼 Paris & Île-de-France

The capital, where most flights from India land: the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame and Montmartre, the palace and gardens of Versailles 40 minutes out by RER C, and Disneyland Paris at Marne-la-Vallée to the east. Every main TGV line starts here.

⛪ Normandy, Mont-Saint-Michel & Saint-Malo

The Channel coast west of Paris: Honfleur's harbour and the white cliffs of Étretat, the D-Day landing beaches and war cemeteries around Bayeux, the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel on its tidal island, and just over the border in Brittany the walled port of Saint-Malo. Two to four hours from Paris by train and coach.

🏯 Loire Valley

The river valley of the Renaissance châteaux, Chenonceau, Chambord, Amboise and Villandry, with wine caves and flat cycle paths between them. Under two hours from Paris by train.

🍾 Champagne & Alsace

East of Paris on the TGV Est line: the Champagne cellars of Reims, then Strasbourg's cathedral and canals and Colmar's half-timbered streets on the Alsace Wine Route, by the German border. Famous for its Christmas markets from late November.

🍷 South-West & Occitanie

Bordeaux and its vineyards, the Dordogne's cliff castles and cave art round Sarlat, the surf and Basque towns round Biarritz, the pilgrim town of Lourdes under the Pyrenees, and the walled city of Carcassonne on the way to the Mediterranean.

🦁 Lyon & the Rhône

France's food capital, two hours from Paris by TGV, and the rail junction for the Alps and Provence.

🏔️ French Alps

Lake Annecy and Chamonix under Mont Blanc, with cable cars to 3,842 m. Summer is for lakes and walking (June to September), winter for skiing (December to April). Geneva's airport, in Switzerland, is the nearest.

💜 Provence

The papal city of Avignon, Roman Arles and the Camargue, the Luberon hill villages and lavender around Gordes (late June to July), and Marseille and Cassis with the white cliffs of the Calanques. Hot, dry summers; spring and autumn are best.

🏖️ Côte d'Azur (French Riviera)

Nice, Antibes, Cannes, Villefranche-sur-Mer and the perched village of Èze on the Mediterranean, joined by a coastal train, with Monaco (a separate country) 20 minutes from Nice. Nice has the region's airport. July and August are hot, packed and expensive.

🏝️ Corsica

A mountainous Mediterranean island: Ajaccio, Napoleon's birthplace, the red cliffs of Piana, and Bonifacio's citadel on white cliffs in the far south. Reached by a short flight from Paris, Nice or Marseille, or by ferry. Best May to October; many hotels close in winter.
