About this circuit

Four of Singapore's quarters, each a short MRT ride from the last: Orchard Road and the Botanic Gardens, with the Night Safari about 30 minutes away; Chinatown and Little India for the temples, hawker centres and Serangoon Road's thalis; Marina Bay for the Supertrees, the SkyPark and the free light shows; and Sentosa for Universal Studios and the beaches.

Why it matters

The Singapore Botanic Gardens are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Sri Mariamman in Chinatown is the island's oldest Hindu temple. Little India is where Indian travellers feel at home: the Sri Veeramakaliamman temple, Tekka Centre, the late-night Mustafa Centre and pure-vegetarian restaurants such as Komala Vilas and Ananda Bhavan.

Stop by stop

How the 5 days split across the 4 stops, and what each one costs on the ground for two.

1.Orchard & Botanic GardensDay 1 · 1 day here

Orchard Road's two kilometres of malls (ION, Takashimaya, Paragon) and the Singapore Botanic Gardens at its western end, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the National Orchid Garden and free morning walks under old rain trees. Dempsey Hill's restaurants and Emerald Hill's Peranakan terraces are close. The Mandai wildlife parks (Singapore Zoo, the Night Safari, Bird Paradise and River Wonders) are about 30 minutes north by cab, so Orchard is the usual base for an evening at the Night Safari. Many 4- and 5-star hotels; few budget ones.

Don't miss: Singapore Botanic Gardens (UNESCO) · National Orchid Garden.

How long: 1 day here; on its own Orchard & Botanic Gardens is worth 2 — add a day if you can.

Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), 24 km

1 day for two from ₹9,469 · ₹19,198 mid-range — stay, food, local travel and entry; the journey here is extra

2.Chinatown & Little IndiaDay 2 · 1 day here

The old ethnic quarters, three kilometres apart on the North East MRT line, with the cheapest good hotels in central Singapore. Chinatown has the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, Sri Mariamman (the island's oldest Hindu temple), shophouse streets and Maxwell Food Centre. Little India, round Serangoon Road, is where Indian travellers feel at home: the Sri Veeramakaliamman and Sri Srinivasa Perumal temples, flower-garland stalls, Tekka Centre, the Indian Heritage Centre, the late-night Mustafa Centre, and pure-vegetarian South Indian restaurants such as Komala Vilas and Ananda Bhavan. Kampong Glam's Sultan Mosque and Haji Lane are a walk away.

Don't miss: Buddha Tooth Relic Temple · Sri Mariamman Temple.

How long: 1 day here; on its own Chinatown & Little India is worth 2 — add a day if you can.

Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), 20 km

1 day for two from ₹6,435 · ₹15,098 mid-range — stay, food, local travel and entry; the journey here is extra

3.Marina BayDay 3 · 1 day here

The postcard Singapore round the bay: Gardens by the Bay's Supertrees and the cooled Flower Dome and Cloud Forest, Marina Bay Sands and its SkyPark, the Merlion, the Esplanade, and the free evening light shows at the Supertree Grove and on the bay. The Singapore River runs back from here past Boat Quay and Clarke Quay to the old colonial district, with the National Gallery and the Padang. Central, walkable, and on four MRT lines, so it is the easiest base for a first visit, and the dearest. Lau Pa Sat's satay street and the hawker centres of the financial district keep meals affordable.

Don't miss: Supertree Grove and the OCBC Skyway · Flower Dome and Cloud Forest.

How long: 1 day here; on its own Marina Bay is worth 2 — add a day if you can.

Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), 20 km

1 day for two from ₹14,716 · ₹23,930 mid-range — stay, food, local travel and entry; the journey here is extra

4.SentosaDay 4–5 · 2 days here

The resort island off the south coast, joined to the city by a road bridge, the Sentosa Express monorail from VivoCity, a free boardwalk and the cable car. Universal Studios Singapore, the Singapore Oceanarium, the Skyline Luge, Wings of Time and three man-made beaches (Siloso, Palawan, Tanjong) fill a day or two, and families with children often stay here. Rooms and meals cost more than in town; the beaches are for a swim and a sunset, not for clear water.

Don't miss: Universal Studios Singapore · Singapore Oceanarium.

How long: 2 days, which is the recommended stay.

Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), 27 km

2 days for two from ₹55,901 · ₹94,502 mid-range — stay, food, local travel and entry; the journey here is extra
