Supertrees, the SkyPark and the Skyline on the Water
The postcard Singapore round the bay: Gardens by the Bay's Supertrees and the cooled Flower Dome and Cloud Forest, Marina Bay Sands and its SkyPark, the Merlion, the Esplanade, and the free evening light shows at the Supertree Grove and on the bay. The Singapore River runs back from here past Boat Quay and Clarke Quay to the old colonial district, with the National Gallery and the Padang. Central, walkable, and on four MRT lines, so it is the easiest base for a first visit, and the dearest. Lau Pa Sat's satay street and the hawker centres of the financial district keep meals affordable.

When to go
Best time: February – April
Worth knowing
Haze Season
From about August to October, smoke from forest fires in Sumatra and Borneo can blanket Singapore. 2026 was the worst season since 2015: the PSI was unhealthy every day from 5 October. Check the PSI on haze.gov.sg or the myENV app each morning; above 100, keep outdoor time short (Gardens by the Bay's domes, malls and museums are indoors), and bring N95 masks for children, older travellers and anyone with asthma. The rains usually clear it by November.
Heads up
Monsoon Showers
November to January are the wettest months: heavy thundery showers most afternoons, sometimes all day during a monsoon surge in December or January. Mornings are often clear. Plan outdoor sights early, keep an umbrella, and hold indoor options (malls, museums, the Gardens by the Bay domes) for the afternoon.
Worth knowing
Formula 1 Week: Roads Closed, Prices Up
The Singapore Grand Prix (9-11 October 2026; 2027 listed for 8-10 October) runs on Marina Bay's streets. Hotel rooms near the circuit cost several times the usual rate and sell out months ahead, roads round the bay close for days before and after, and parts of the waterfront are fenced in for ticket holders. Unless you are going to the race, avoid that week or stay away from the bay.
Heads up
Chinese New Year Closures
On 6-7 February 2027 (holiday to 8 February) many hawker stalls and small shops close for a few days and some restaurants charge a holiday surcharge; malls, attractions and hotels stay open, and the River Hongbao fair runs at Marina Bay.
- Chinese New Year (Chinatown light-up and River Hongbao) — Singapore's biggest festival. For weeks before it, Chinatown's streets are hung with lanterns and the festive market sells sweets and decorations; the River Hongbao fair on the bay has lanterns, food and fireworks. On the two days themselves many hawker stalls, small shops and some restaurants close, often for three or four days, while malls, attractions and hotels stay open. Chinatown is packed the evening before.
- National Day Parade and fireworks — Singapore's birthday, with a parade, flypasts and fireworks round Marina Bay or the Padang. Parade tickets go by ballot to residents, but the fireworks can be seen from the bay's promenades, which fill hours early; the rehearsals on Saturdays in July have fireworks too. Roads round Marina Bay close on parade and rehearsal days.
- Mid-Autumn Festival (lanterns) — Lanterns over Chinatown's streets and lantern displays at Gardens by the Bay, with mooncakes sold everywhere. Free to walk through in the evenings.
- Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix · 9–11 Oct (with a sprint) — The night race on the Marina Bay street circuit, with concerts in the circuit zones. Hotel prices across the city jump for the week, roads round Marina Bay close for days before and after, and Gardens by the Bay's and the bay's viewing spots are partly fenced off. A thrill if you have tickets; otherwise a week to avoid (alerts.ts).
- Christmas on Orchard Road — Orchard Road's Christmas light-up runs from mid-November to the new year, with the malls decorated, and Gardens by the Bay holds a Christmas market. It is also Singapore's school holiday, so Sentosa and the Mandai parks are busy and hotels fill.
