🏔️ Quba & the North

Up the Caspian coast and into the mountains: Quba's orchards and its Jewish Red Settlement, the stone village of Khinalug at 2,300 m with its own language, and Shahdag, the country's ski resort. Three to four hours from Baku; the high roads can close with snow in winter.

🏰 Shamakhi, Gabala & Sheki

The old Silk Road under the Greater Caucasus: Shamakhi's great mosque and vineyards, the coppersmiths of Lahij, the cable cars and forests of Gabala, and Sheki's Khan's Palace and caravanserai. A loop of five to six hours' driving from Baku, by bus, shared taxi, the overnight train to Sheki or the train to Gabala.

📜 Ganja & the West

Azerbaijan's second city, Ganja, the home of the poet Nizami, with Goygol lake in the hills above it, and Naftalan's sanatoriums with their baths in medicinal oil. Four and a half hours from Baku on the fast train; a daily train links Ganja with Gabala.

🔥 Baku & Absheron

The capital on the Caspian and the peninsula around it: the walled Old City, the Boulevard and the Flame Towers, and day trips to Gobustan's rock art and mud volcanoes, Yanar Dag's burning hillside and the Ateshgah fire temple that Indian traders built at Surakhani. Every flight from India lands here, and every road and railway out of the country starts here.
