🌊 Alexandria & the Mediterranean
Alexander the Great's city on the sea: the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Citadel of Qaitbay, Greek and Roman catacombs and a long Corniche of cafés and seafood. Three hours from Cairo by train, and the road west to Siwa.
🔺 Cairo & Giza
The capital and the pyramids: the Grand Egyptian Museum with Tutankhamun's treasure, Islamic and Coptic Cairo, the Giza plateau with its Sphinx and pyramid-view hotels, and Saqqara and Dahshur's older pyramids a half-day south. Almost every flight from India lands at Cairo.
🏜️ The Western Desert
The oases of the Sahara west of the Nile: Siwa's salt lakes, palm groves and Oracle of Amun near the Libyan border, and Bahariya, the base for a night camping among the chalk towers of the White Desert. Long drives, licensed operators and police checkpoints; the border zones themselves are off-limits.
🏛️ The Nile Valley (Upper Egypt)
Luxor's temples and royal tombs, Aswan's granite islands, Philae and Nubian villages, and Ramesses II's colossi at Abu Simbel, linked by the sleeper train from Cairo and by Nile cruises that stop at Edfu and Kom Ombo. October to April is the season; from May to September it passes 40 °C.
🐠 The Red Sea Coast
Resort beaches and coral reefs from El Gouna and Hurghada down to quiet Marsa Alam: snorkelling boats, diving, kitesurfing and turtles. Hurghada is four hours from Luxor by road, so the temples and the sea combine well.
🤿 South Sinai
The Gulf of Aqaba coast and the mountains behind it: Ras Mohammed's reefs at Sharm El Sheikh, the Blue Hole and Bedouin cafés of Dahab, and the night climb of Mount Sinai above St Catherine's Monastery. North Sinai is closed to visitors.
