🐢 Rodrigues
The small, hilly sister island 560 km to the east, an hour and a half by Air Mauritius from the main airport: a vast lagoon, fishing villages, giant tortoises and coastal walks, with guesthouses rather than resorts.
🏛️ Port Louis & the North
The capital, with its market, waterfront and Aapravasi Ghat, where indentured labourers from India landed, and the north coast beyond it: Grand Baie's busy bay and boats to the northern islets, the calm beaches of Trou aux Biches and Mont Choisy, and the giant water lilies of the Pamplemousses botanic garden. The liveliest part of the island, an hour or more from the airport.

🐬 West & South-West Coast
The sheltered, sunny side of the island: Flic en Flac's long beach and sunsets, the dolphins of Tamarin Bay, and Le Morne Brabant, the UNESCO-listed mountain at the south-west tip with its lagoon and kitesurf spot. Calm even in winter.
🌈 Southern Highlands
The green plateau and gorges of the south-west: the Seven Coloured Earth and the waterfall at Chamarel, the forest trails and viewpoints of Black River Gorges National Park, and Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao), the Hindu sacred lake. Cooler and wetter than the coast, and best seen in day trips from the west coast or on the way across the island.

Black River GorgesThe National Park: Forest Trails, Viewpoints and Waterfalls1 day · best May – December (drier trails)- 🔱Grand BassinGanga Talao: The Hindu Sacred Lake on the Plateau1 day · best All year (Maha Shivaratri in February or March)
🏝️ East & South-East Coast
The long beaches and big resorts of Belle Mare, with the catamarans to Île aux Cerfs, and the old town of Mahébourg with the Blue Bay marine park, ten minutes from the airport. Breezy and cooler in winter (June to September), when the trade winds blow onshore.
