Entry rules

Visa needed before you fly for up to 90 days, about ₹4,500

Apply for a C-3-9 short-term tourist visa at the Korea Visa Application Centre (run by VFS Global) for your state, about a month before you fly: ₹3,400 visa fee plus ₹1,100 service charge. Allow about 10 working days; express processing is not offered at the Delhi and Kolkata centres.

🏯 Seoul & Around

The capital and its day trips: Seoul's palaces, hanok lanes, markets and K-culture districts, the DMZ on the North Korean border, the UNESCO fortress of Suwon, and Nami Island and the lake city of Chuncheon an hour north-east. Flights from India land at Incheon, 50 km west of the city.

⛰️ Gangwon: East Coast & Mountains

Mountains and the East Sea: Gangneung's beaches, coffee street and sunrise at Jeongdongjin, under two hours from Seoul by KTX; Sokcho and the granite peaks of Seoraksan, glorious in mid-October; and Pyeongchang's Olympic ski slopes from December to March.

🌊 Gyeongsang: Busan, Gyeongju & Andong

The south-east: Busan's beaches, markets and hillside villages; Gyeongju, the thousand-year Silla capital of tombs and temples; Daegu, Korea's third city; Andong and the UNESCO clan village of Hahoe; and the island harbour of Tongyeong on the south coast. Busan's Gimhae airport flies to Jeju and across Asia.

🍚 Jeolla: Jeonju, Yeosu & Suncheon

The south-west, Korea's food country, down the KTX Jeolla line: Jeonju's hanok village and bibimbap, the reed wetlands of Suncheon Bay, and the harbour, cable car and island temples of Yeosu, where ferries leave for Jeju.

🌋 Jeju Island

Korea's volcanic holiday island, an hour's flight from Seoul or Busan: craters, lava tubes and Hallasan around Jeju City in the north, waterfalls, cliffs and resort beaches around Seogwipo in the south. Windy in winter, wet in the July monsoon, in the path of typhoons in August and September.
