Lake Villages and the Schafberg Steam Railway
The Wolfgangsee, 45 minutes from Salzburg, with St Wolfgang's pilgrimage church and the White Horse Inn on one shore and St Gilgen, Mozart's mother's village, on the other. The Schafberg cog railway climbs from St Wolfgang to a summit view over a dozen lakes (late April to October), and lake boats link the villages in the same season. Mondsee, with the church of The Sound of Music wedding, and the Fuschlsee are on the way from Salzburg; Bad Ischl, the emperor's summer town, is 15 minutes the other way. Calmer and greener than Hallstatt.

Heads up
Schafberg Railway and Lake Boats Stopped
The Schafberg cog railway and the Wolfgangsee boats run from about late April to late October. In winter the villages are quiet (busy again on Advent weekends for the lake Christmas market); the buses round the lake run all year.
- Christmas markets — From mid or late November to 23-26 December: Vienna's on the Rathausplatz, at Schönbrunn and the Belvedere, Salzburg's on the Domplatz, Innsbruck's under the Golden Roof, and the Wolfgangsee's on Advent weekends. Mulled wine (Glühwein, or alcohol-free Kinderpunsch), roasted chestnuts and crafts; rooms in Vienna and Salzburg fill on Advent weekends.
