A small town in the Salzach valley, 40 minutes south of Salzburg by train, below two sights: the Eisriesenwelt, the largest ice cave in the world, high in the Tennengebirge (a steep walk, a lift and hundreds of steps inside at about 0 °C, with carbide lamps), and Hohenwerfen castle with its falconry show. Both are open only from about May to October. A long half day from Salzburg, often on the way to Zell am See or Bad Gastein.

The Eisriesenwelt ice cave and Hohenwerfen castle are open only from about May to late October. In winter there is nothing to visit at Werfen; see Salzburg instead.
