Austria / Vienna & the Danube / ViennaVienna
Palaces, Coffee Houses and the City of Music
Austria's capital and its only airport with flights from India (all one-stop in the 2026-27 winter). The imperial city of the Habsburgs: Schönbrunn and the Hofburg with the Sisi Museum, the Belvedere with Klimt's The Kiss, St Stephen's Cathedral, the Ringstrasse and the museum quarter, plus coffee houses, the Naschmarkt and concerts every night (the State Opera sells cheap standing places, but has no performances in July and August). The trams and U-Bahn are easy, and the CAT and S-Bahn trains run from the airport. Vegetarian food is easy and Indian restaurants are plentiful. Vienna's hotel tax rose to 5% in July 2026 and goes to 8% in July 2027.

The Vienna State Opera and the Musikverein's main season rest in July and August. Summer concerts (the Schönbrunn palace concerts, the free film festival on the Rathausplatz) fill the gap; book the opera for September to June.

Christmas Market Weekends
From mid-November to Christmas, Vienna's markets draw coach tours from across Europe: Advent weekends fill the hotels and the old town. Come midweek if you can, and book rooms early.
- New Year's Concert and the ball season — The Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert on 1 January (tickets by lottery, applied for a year ahead) opens the ball season: hundreds of balls until Shrove Tuesday, many open to visitors with a ticket and evening dress.
- Vienna Opera Ball — The grandest ball of the season, in the State Opera on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday; the opera has no performances for a few days around it. Tickets are costly and sell out; the TV broadcast is the cheap seat.
- Donauinselfest — A free open-air music festival on the Danube Island over a weekend in late June, with hundreds of thousands of people each day; the U-Bahn is packed.
- Christmas markets — From mid or late November to 23-26 December: Vienna's on the Rathausplatz, at Schönbrunn and the Belvedere, Salzburg's on the Domplatz, Innsbruck's under the Golden Roof, and the Wolfgangsee's on Advent weekends. Mulled wine (Glühwein, or alcohol-free Kinderpunsch), roasted chestnuts and crafts; rooms in Vienna and Salzburg fill on Advent weekends.
