Wachau Valley (Melk & Dürnstein)

Baroque Abbeys, Vineyards and the Danube by Boat

1 dayIdeal stay₹10,120From / night₹3,200Food / day₹1,860Entry

A UNESCO-listed stretch of the Danube between Melk and Krems, an hour or so west of Vienna: the gold-and-white baroque abbey of Melk on its rock, the blue tower of Dürnstein and the castle ruin where Richard the Lionheart was held, apricot orchards and terraced Grüner Veltliner vineyards. Boats run between Melk and Krems from late March or April to October, and a riverside cycle path follows the whole valley. Most visitors come on a day trip from Vienna (train to Melk, boat downstream, train back from Krems); a night in Dürnstein or Spitz is quieter. Wine taverns (Heurige) serve simple vegetarian plates.

Heads up

No Wachau Boats in Winter

The scheduled boats between Melk, Dürnstein and Krems run from late March or April to October (in 2026 from 28 March). In winter see the valley by train (the Wachaubahn line, where it runs) or by bus along the river, and Melk Abbey on a guided tour.

  • Apricot blossom in the Wachau — The Wachau's apricot orchards flower white for about two weeks from late March or early April, when the boats start running again; weekends are busy.
  • Wine harvest in the Wachau — Grape picking on the terraces and the wine taverns (Heurige) open with the new wine; the boats run until late October.
