Bruges

Canals, a Belfry and Medieval Lanes

2 daysIdeal stay₹10,120From / night₹3,200Food / day₹1,490Entry

The best-kept medieval city in northern Europe and a UNESCO site: the Markt and its Belfry (366 steps), the Burg and the Basilica of the Holy Blood, canal boat tours, the Flemish Primitives in the Groeninge Museum, Michelangelo's Madonna and Child in the Church of Our Lady, the Beguinage and Minnewater. Day trips and cruise coaches crowd it from late morning; stay a night to see it quiet. Direct trains from Brussels every half hour take about an hour, and the coast at Ostend or Knokke is 15-20 minutes on (estimate). From late November the Christmas market and the Winter Glow light trail run into the new year.

Worth knowing

Day-Trippers and Cruise Coaches

From late morning to late afternoon the Markt, the Burg and the canal-side lanes fill with day trips and coach groups from the Zeebrugge cruise port; on December weekends the Christmas market adds to it. See the Belfry at opening time, stay the night to walk the lanes in the evening, and book December weekends early. From 2027 the city charges cruise and coach groups a €5 day-visitor tax.

  • Bruges Christmas market and Winter Glow — Stalls on the Markt and Simon Stevinplein and a skating rink from late November to early January (in 2026-27 from about 20 November, sources differ), and the Winter Glow light trail through the parks into February. Hotel prices are at their highest on December weekends: book early.
