Entry rules
Visa needed before you fly for up to 90 days, about ₹11,840
Apply for a Schengen short-stay (type C) visa at a VFS Global Belgium centre in India, 4-8 weeks before you fly, and at least 6 weeks ahead for May to August, when appointments are scarce (no earlier than 6 months). Apply to Belgium if it is your only or longest stay in Schengen. The fee is €90 (about ₹9,600; €45 for children 6-11) plus the VFS service charge, and it is not refunded if the visa is refused.
Checked 2026-10; confirm with the embassy before you fly.
⚛️ Brussels & Leuven
The capital, where the flights land: the Grand-Place, the Atomium, the Magritte Museum and the European Quarter, with Eurostar trains from Brussels-Midi to Paris and London. Leuven, the old university town with its Gothic Town Hall, is 25 minutes east by train and closer still to the airport.
💎 Antwerp & Mechelen
The port city of Rubens and diamonds, with its palace of a railway station, its cathedral altarpieces and its Gujarati Jain community round the temple at Wilrijk, and Mechelen's cathedral tower and quiet centre halfway to Brussels. Trains every few minutes link the two and the airport.
🛶 Bruges, Ghent & Flanders Fields
Western Flanders: canal-ringed Bruges, Ghent with its castle and the Ghent Altarpiece, and Ypres, where the Last Post sounds every evening at the Menin Gate for the soldiers of the First World War, Indian soldiers among them. Fast, frequent trains from Brussels.
BrugesCanals, a Belfry and Medieval Lanes2 days · best April – June, September – October; late November – December for the Christmas market
GhentThe Ghent Altarpiece, a Castle and Canal-Side Guildhalls2 days · best April – June, September – October; July for the Gentse Feesten
Ypres (Ieper)The Menin Gate and the Battlefields of Flanders Fields2 days · best April – June, September – November; 11 November for Armistice Day
🌲 The Meuse & the Ardennes
French-speaking Wallonia's wooded hills and river valleys: Dinant under its citadel on the Meuse, with the Grotte de Han and kayaks on the Lesse nearby, and tiny Durbuy on the Ourthe, beside Radhadesh, the Krishna temple in a castle. Trains are slower here; a hire car helps.
