Lucerne

The Chapel Bridge, the Lake and Two Classic Summits

2 daysIdeal stay₹16,240From / night₹4,410Food / day₹13,920Entry

The most visited town in central Switzerland, on the outflow of Lake Lucerne: the covered wooden Chapel Bridge and its water tower, the Lion Monument carved into a cliff, and an old town of painted squares. Paddle steamers cross the lake, and Mount Pilatus (the world's steepest cogwheel line from Alpnachstad) and Mount Rigi are classic day trips; Titlis is an hour away at Engelberg. 45 minutes from Zurich by train. Indian restaurants and Indian tour groups are common in summer.

When to go

Best time: May – September

Heads up

Grimsel, Furka and Susten Passes Closed

The high road passes (Grimsel, Furka, Susten, Nufenen) close for the winter, roughly from late October to late May or June, earlier after a snowfall (they reopened on 29 May in 2026, the Susten in June). Trains and the year-round car trains through the Furka and Lötschberg tunnels are not affected; only scenic drives and pass buses are.

Summer Crowds

May and June bring the Indian summer-holiday tours, July and August the European summer: queues at the Jungfraujoch, Titlis and Gornergrat stations, full trains and the year's highest room prices. Go up on the first train, and book rooms 2-3 months ahead.

Heads up

Lucerne Festival

From mid-August to mid-September the Lucerne Festival's concerts fill the town's hotels on top of the summer tours; book rooms early.

  • Lucerne Fasnacht — Lucerne's carnival opens at 05:00 on "Dirty Thursday" with a bang and runs to Tuesday night: brass Guggenmusik bands, masks and parades through the old town. Loud, crowded and fun; book rooms early.
  • Swiss National Day — 1 August is the national holiday: bonfires on the hills, fireworks and lantern parades, and brunch on farms. The biggest display is over the Rhine Falls on the evening of 31 July; book the viewing tickets and trains ahead.
  • Lucerne Festival in Summer · 13 Aug – 13 Sep — One of Europe's leading classical festivals, at the KKL concert hall by the lake, from mid-August to mid-September. Concert tickets sell out early, and Lucerne's hotels are at their dearest.
  • Christmas markets — From late November to just before Christmas: Basel's on Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz, Zurich's in the station hall and on Sechseläutenplatz, Montreux Noël along the lake. Weekend crowds; mulled wine and raclette stalls.
