🏙️ Zurich & Northern Switzerland
The German-speaking north: Zurich and its lake, where the flights from India land; Basel's museums on the Rhine at the French and German border; the Rhine Falls by Schaffhausen; and the painted houses and cliff-face inn of Appenzell. Fast, frequent trains and short distances.

🚂 Graubünden (St. Moritz & Davos)
The large, thinly peopled south-east, where Romansh is still spoken: St. Moritz and the Engadine lakes, Davos, and the narrow-gauge Rhaetian Railway whose Albula and Bernina lines are a UNESCO site. The Bernina Express runs to Tirano in Italy and the Glacier Express to Zermatt.
🌴 Ticino
Italian-speaking Switzerland south of the Gotthard, two hours from Zurich through the base tunnel: Lugano and its lake, palms, piazzas and lakeside villages, with Locarno on Lake Maggiore nearby. The mildest weather in the country, good from spring to autumn.
🌉 Lucerne & Central Switzerland
Lake Lucerne and the mountains round it: the Chapel Bridge, paddle steamers, Pilatus and Rigi from Lucerne, and Titlis with its revolving cabin and year-round snow above Engelberg. The heart of most first trips to Switzerland.
🏔️ Bern & the Bernese Oberland
The arcaded capital and the Alps south of it: Interlaken between its two lakes, Jungfraujoch at 3,454 m, the waterfall valley of Lauterbrunnen with car-free Wengen and Mürren, Grindelwald under the Eiger, and the chalet luxury of Gstaad. The busiest region for Indian travellers.

🗻 Valais (Zermatt & Saas-Fee)
The high valleys of the south-west, with most of Switzerland's four-thousand-metre peaks: car-free Zermatt under the Matterhorn, start of the Glacier Express, and car-free Saas-Fee among its glaciers. Both are reached from Visp, by train to Zermatt and by PostBus to Saas-Fee.
⛲ Geneva & Lake Geneva
The French-speaking west round Lac Léman: international Geneva with its fountain and the UN, Lausanne's cathedral and Olympic Museum, the Lavaux vineyard terraces, and Montreux with Chillon Castle and the July jazz festival. Geneva is the second airport, one stop from India.
