The Lednice–Valtice Cultural Landscape, on UNESCO's list: some 200 km² of parkland laid out by the Liechtenstein princes between their two chateaux, neo-Gothic Lednice with its palm greenhouse and Baroque Valtice with the national wine salon in its cellars, scattered with follies, a 60 m minaret among them. People explore it by bicycle, horse carriage or boat on the castle ponds. It lies in the heart of the Moravian wine region, with Mikulov 20 km west. From Brno, take the train to Břeclav and bus 555 or 570 to Lednice, about 1 h 30 in all. Lednice chateau closes for a winter break; the park stays open.

Heads up

Chateaux in Winter Mode

Lednice chateau closes for a winter break (in 2026 its state rooms and palm greenhouse reopened on 31 January) and keeps short hours until spring, and Valtice's chateau tours run mainly in the warm months. The park is open all year, but its follies and the boats on the ponds are a summer outing.

  • Moravian wine harvest festivals — In September the wine towns celebrate the harvest with processions, music and stalls of burčák, the half-fermented new wine: Valtice, Mikulov (the Pálava harvest) and Znojmo have the biggest. Rooms in the wine country fill on those weekends.
