Cuckoo Clocks, Forest Lakes and the Triberg Waterfalls
The wooded hills of the south-west: Titisee, a lake resort 40 minutes from Freiburg on the Höllental railway, with pedal boats and cuckoo-clock shops; Triberg, with its waterfalls tumbling 163 m in seven steps and the giant cuckoo clocks nearby; the Feldberg, the highest summit (1,493 m), for hikes and winter skiing; and Black Forest cake where it was invented. Most hotels give a guest card that makes local trains and buses free (KONUS). Group tours from India often stop at Titisee for an hour: a night or two lets you walk the trails.

Heads up
Snow in the Black Forest
The high Black Forest round Titisee and the Feldberg is snowy in winter: good for skiing and sledging, but trails close, roads need winter tyres or chains, and the Triberg falls are partly iced. The Höllental railway from Freiburg runs all year.
