Imperial Castle, Gingerbread and Germany's Hardest History
Franconia's capital, its walled old town rebuilt after 1945 under the Imperial Castle. Albrecht Dürer's house, St Lorenz and St Sebald churches, and the half-timbered lanes along the Pegnitz; then the 20th century: the Nazi Party Rally Grounds and their documentation centre, and Courtroom 600 of the Nuremberg Trials. The Christkindlesmarkt, from late November to 24 December, is one of the most famous Christmas markets, and Lebkuchen gingerbread is the local speciality. An hour from Munich by ICE; Bamberg and Würzburg are short train rides.

Heads up
Christmas: Shops and Sights Close 24-26 December
Christmas Eve afternoon, Christmas Day and 26 December are Germany's quietest days: shops, most museums and many restaurants close, the Christmas markets end on or before the 24th, and trains run a holiday timetable. Plan arrivals and sightseeing around them. Shops are closed every Sunday too.
- Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt · 27 or 28 Nov – 24 Dec — One of the oldest and most famous Christmas markets, on the Hauptmarkt: wooden stalls with red-and-white awnings, Lebkuchen gingerbread, plum-figure dolls and mulled wine, and the opening prologue by the Christkind from the church balcony. Very crowded at weekends and with coach tours; hotel prices rise and rooms sell out on December weekends.
