A Walled Medieval Town on the Romantic Road
1 dayIdeal stay₹9,050From / night₹2,880Food / day₹960Entry
The best-preserved walled town on the Romantic Road: a complete circuit of walls you can walk on, the Plönlein corner, the town hall tower, the Medieval Crime Museum and Christmas shops open all year. The Night Watchman's tour each evening is the classic (in English). Day-trippers fill it from late morning; stay the night to see it quiet. Reached by a branch-line train from Steinach (about 1 hour 10 from Würzburg, 1.5-2 hours from Nuremberg) with a change or two. The Schneeball pastry is the local sweet.

When to go
Best time: April – October, December
- Christmas markets across Germany — From late November to about 23 December almost every town holds a Christmas market: Rothenburg's Reiterlesmarkt in its medieval square, Berlin's many markets (Gendarmenmarkt, Charlottenburg Palace), Lübeck's and Hamburg's by their town halls, Stuttgart's large market by the old castle. Opening days vary by town and most close on or before Christmas Eve: check before you plan a December trip around one.
