Menorca

Turquoise Coves, Prehistoric Stones and Two Harbour Towns

3 daysIdeal stay₹10,120From / night₹3,200Food / dayFreeEntry

The quietest of the large Balearic islands and a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1993: pine-backed coves of white sand and turquoise water along the south coast (Macarella, Turqueta, Mitjana), the 185 km Camí de Cavalls path round the whole coast, and the prehistoric stone towers, villages and tombs of Talayotic Menorca, a World Heritage Site since 2023, among them the boat-shaped Naveta des Tudons. Mahón (Maó), the capital, stands above a long natural harbour with the airport 5 km away; Ciutadella, at the far end of the island, has the cathedral, arcaded streets and the ferry to Alcúdia on Mallorca (about 1-1.5 h). Overnight ferries from Barcelona (7-9.5 h) and flights from Barcelona, Madrid and Palma. Most beach hotels close from November to March; Mahón and Ciutadella stay open. The Balearic tourist tax is added per person per night.

When to go

Best time: May – June, September – October

Worth knowing

August: Spain on Holiday

August is when Spain takes its holidays: beaches, islands and coast towns are at their fullest and dearest, ferries to the Balearics and trains to the coast sell out, and in Madrid and other inland cities many family restaurants and small shops close for two or three weeks. Book rooms, ferries and trains months ahead, or come in June or September.

Heads up

Menorca Out of Season

From November to March most of Menorca's beach hotels, cove restaurants and boat trips close, and buses to the coves stop or run rarely. Mahón and Ciutadella stay open and the coast path is lovely for walking, but it is too cool to swim for most; for winter sun, the Canaries are warmer.
