A pastel fishing port 25 minutes from Marseille, under Europe's highest sea cliff at Cap Canaille. Boats leave the harbour for the calanques of Port-Miou, Port-Pin and En-Vau, or walk there on the cliff paths; the local white wine goes with the seafood. Packed on summer weekends; parking is hard, and the station is 3 km above the port (shuttle bus).

Peak Summer: Crowds and High Prices on the Coast
July and August are French school holidays: beaches, coast roads and trains along the Mediterranean and the Basque coast are packed, rooms cost 30-100% more and often need a minimum stay, and Corsica's ferries and flights sell out. Book months ahead, or come in June or September, when the sea is still warm.

Calanques: Fire-Risk Closures
From June to September the prefecture can close the Calanques massifs to walkers on high fire-risk days; the map for the next day is published each evening. Sugiton cove needs a free reservation in summer. Boat trips still run, so book one as the fallback.
