France / Côte d'Azur (French Riviera) / Èze & Villefranche-sur-MerÈze & Villefranche-sur-Mer
A Perched Village, a Deep-Water Bay and Monaco Next Door
The stretch of Riviera between Nice and Monaco, on the coastal railway. Villefranche-sur-Mer is an old fishing town on one of the deepest natural harbours in the Mediterranean, with Jean Cocteau's painted chapel, a citadel and a sandy beach; Èze is a medieval village perched 427 m above the sea, crowned by the cacti and views of its Jardin Exotique, with the Nietzsche Path zigzagging down to Èze-sur-Mer. Between them are Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat's coastal paths and the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild and its gardens. Stay in Villefranche, which has hotels at most prices, or in one of Èze's château hotels. Nice is about 10 minutes away by train, and Monaco 10-15 minutes the other way: a separate country (a principality, not in the EU) with an open border, no passport check and the euro, best seen as a day out. Bus 82 climbs from Nice to Èze village in about 30 minutes.

When to go
Best time: May – June, September – October
Worth knowing
Peak Summer: Crowds and High Prices on the Coast
July and August are French school holidays: beaches, coast roads and trains along the Mediterranean and the Basque coast are packed, rooms cost 30-100% more and often need a minimum stay, and Corsica's ferries and flights sell out. Book months ahead, or come in June or September, when the sea is still warm.
