The Sun King's Palace, Its Gardens and the Trianons
The palace Louis XIV built round his father's hunting lodge, seat of the French court until the Revolution: the Hall of Mirrors and the King's and Queen's state apartments, the Royal Chapel, Le Nôtre's formal gardens and fountains, the Grand and Petit Trianon, and Marie-Antoinette's hamlet. The palace is shut on Mondays and needs a timed ticket; non-EU visitors pay €35 for the Passport (palace, Trianon estate and gardens) in high season. RER C trains from central Paris take about 40 minutes on an ordinary €2.55 Métro-Train-RER ticket, and Transilien trains run from Montparnasse and Saint-Lazare, so most visitors come for the day. A night in the town puts you at the gates at opening, before the tour coaches, and leaves the evening for the old town and its market square.
