The Stone Circle on Salisbury Plain, and Magna Carta's Cathedral
Stonehenge, the 5,000-year-old stone circle on Salisbury Plain, with a visitor centre and a shuttle to the stones, and Salisbury, a cathedral city 15 km south whose cathedral has Britain's tallest spire and the best surviving copy of Magna Carta. Salisbury is 1 hour 30 from London Waterloo by train, and the Stonehenge Tour bus runs from the station. Stonehenge tickets are timed: book ahead, especially at weekends.

Stonehenge at the Solstice
At the summer solstice (around 21 June) and the winter solstice English Heritage opens the stones to thousands at dawn, free, with road closures and normal visits changed around it. Check its website for the year's arrangements, or avoid those days.
