The spa town whose salty mineral water was bottled across the Russian empire, in a forested gorge two and a half hours west of Tbilisi. The Mineral Water Park, sulphur pools up the valley and the trails of Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park are the draws; the narrow-gauge "Kukushka" train climbs from here to the ski resort of Bakuriani. A good stop on the way to Vardzia.
